Rescue Reading

Did you know that reading to rescue cats helps them get adopted? AHS Rescue Readers, ages 3 and up, help our cats build social skills, making it easier for them to find forever homes. Readers also improve their literacy, learn about animal behavior, and make new furry friends along the way. It’s a win for everyone!

To keep visits calm for our cats, each adult may bring up to 2 readers. We can occasionally welcome a third reader for older children with prior approval, so email us before booking.

View our Rescue Reading guide and schedule your next visit on our calendar.

Cost: Free
Time: 30-minute or 1 hour sessions
Location: AHS Adoption Lobby

Scheduling:
Tuesday–Thursday, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM

How It Works

  1. Schedule your first visit
All new participants begin with a brief orientation (about 5 minutes) covering program guidelines, animal body language, and safety. Offered Wednesday and Thursday.
  2. Read to the cats
After orientation, the remainder of your visit is yours to read and spend time with the cats.
  3. Return Tuesday – Thursday
Once completed, you may schedule future visits freely through our calendar.

What to Expect

  • Readers may choose from available cat colony rooms
  • These rooms are open to the public, visitors may enter during your time
  • Bring your own books or borrow from our education library
  • Adults must stay with children at all times

We ask that readers practice patience and allow cats to approach at their own pace. These are some of our most social cats, and your time helps them build positive association with new people of all ages.

Program Notes

  • Readers must sign in upon arrival
  • Hand sanitizer is required between rooms
  • Some rooms may be unavailable depending on animal needs
