Adopting an animal at the Austin Humane Society is a simple process, and we have a dedicated staff of Adoption Counselors to help you through the process.
How to Adopt an Animal at AHS:
- Browse the animals online, then fill out our adoption questionnaire (cuestionario de adopción en español).
- Stop by the shelter to visit with any available animals in person. Please leave your other pets at home, we can schedule dog introductions at a later date as needed.
- Speak with an Adoption Counselor. They’ll pull up your questionnaire and tell you more about the animal—their personality, their history, what to expect, etc.
- Get to know the animal! Play with them, pet them, or just sit with them.
- Once you’ve decided to adopt, you’ll fill out the paperwork onsite. Many animals are ready to go home that day!
- Enjoy your lifetime of unconditional love.
When you adopt from AHS, you are receiving over $500 of services included in your adoption fee.
- Current vaccinations
- Spay/neuter surgery
- Microchip & chip registration
- Deworming
- FeLV/FIV test for cats (when applicable)
- Heartworm test for dogs (when applicable)
- Basic life skills training for dogs
- Socialization
- Dog food sample
- Local pet store & service discounts

At AHS, our adoption prices vary according to the age, breed, and size of an animal. Our most popular breeds have higher adoption fees in order to leave a financial legacy for animals in our program that need specialized medical care or training in order to find a loving home.
