Adopting an animal at the Austin Humane Society is a simple process, and we have a dedicated staff of Adoption Counselors to help you through the process.
How to Adopt an Animal at AHS
- Browse the animals online and contact us during our shelter hours, or stop by the shelter to see the animals in person.
- Fill out an adoption application, then get to know the animal. Play with them, take them for a quick walk, or just sit with them.
- Talk to your Adoption Counselor about the animal—their personality, their history, what to expect, etc.
- Once you’ve decided to adopt, you’ll fill out the paperwork onsite and go home that day!
- Enjoy your lifetime of unconditional love.

When you adopt from AHS, you are recieving over $430 of services included in your adoption fee.
- Current vaccinations
- Spay/neuter surgery
- Microchip & chip registration
- Deworming
- Free wellness exam adoption
- Heartworm test(when applicapable)
- Basic life skills training for dogs

Foster Care Volunteers provide a temporary home for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens who aren’t yet available for adoption. We need loving homes like yours to continue helping these animals in need of a bit extra TLC. Help out by getting involved with our Foster Care Program!

Humane Heroes Program
If you have kids under 14 who want to be involved with AHS, we have the program for you! Our Humane Hero Program is designed to allow kids who are too young to volunteer at AHS on their own, to still be involved with the animals! By becoming a Humane Hero, kids get to have fun and make a big impact in the lives of homeless pets!
