Mega Community Cat Clinic Day

Austin Humane Society’s Mega Community Cat Clinic Day brings free, high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgery to the community cats who need it most. On a Mega Day, our team is prepared to spay and neuter over 100 cats in a single morning, while providing the highest quality of care.

All cats must arrive in humane traps, one cat per trap, and will be ear-tipped as part of their visit. This clinic is for Austin/Travis County community cats only. This event is especially helpful for those with trapping experience and a large number of community cats needing TNR.

What a Mega Clinic Day Looks Like

Every cat that comes through the door on a Mega Clinic Day is trapped by a volunteer or community member. AHS works with trappers from all over Travis County who spend their own time, often early mornings and long nights, setting humane traps in the neighborhoods, alleys, and back lots where community cats live.

Once the cats arrive, it’s a full operation. Our veterinarians and a team of highly skilled vet technicians move each cat through sedation, surgery prep, the procedure itself, and recovery. A dozen additional volunteers keep the day running: tracking cats, prepping supplies, making sure nothing gets missed. By the end of the day, every cat is back with the trapper who brought them in, ready to return to their colony; this practice is called TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

Beyond surgery, each cat also receives a rabies vaccine, an FVRCP vaccine protecting against several serious feline viruses, flea and parasite prevention, and an ear tip- the small, painless notch that’s the universal signal a community cat has already been spayed or neutered.

The FVRCP vaccines for these cats are being provided through a grant from Petco Love, whose support means every cat that comes through the door this month is protected against disease too.

Why This Work Matters

An estimated 25 to 30 percent of kittens born outdoors survive to adulthood. Life for these kittens is hard, and it gets harder fast: a single unaltered pair of cats can be the start of dozens more within a year.

Trap-Neuter-Return breaks that cycle before it starts. It helps manage population and reduces the number of cats coming into shelters down the road. It also gives the cats already living healthier, calmer lives outdoors.

Since 2007, AHS has provided this care to more than 90,000 cats.
