Special Update from our President & CEO

Dear AHS family,

I’m reaching out to you today with an update on how the Austin Humane Society is preparing for, and dealing with, the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak. Like many of you, we too are concerned about the unprecedented challenge our world is facing and we want to do everything possible to keep our community, our animals, and our AHS family safe.

That is why we are following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and implementing existing emergency and disaster protocols we have utilized numerous times over the years.

  • We are increasing our stores of dog and cat food, medical supplies, and other items to keep the shelter running.
  • We’re holding daily briefings with AHS leadership to set the day’s plan and adjust procedures as the situation changes
  • We’re communicating with our staff and volunteers about staying home if they are sick, washing their hands, and following CDC recommendations.
  • We are increasing our efforts to continuously sanitize shelter areas to make them as safe as possible.

Here are a few facts you should know about animals and COVID-19:

Many of you have asked how you can help:

With health being our top priority, we need to place more animals in safe, loving forever homes. That’s why today through Monday we are offering discounted adoptions on all animals.

We are in immediate need of people to sign up to foster should we need to move additional dogs and cats out of the shelter.

We are asking people to sign up to volunteer and help our team at the shelter.

If you’d like to make a donation, your gift will help AHS continue to do our life-saving work.

Finally, we want to make sure you and your family are as prepared as possible. Remember, you must include your family pet in the planning to ensure they have a safe place to go should they need it.

We know this is a challenging time. All of us at the Austin Humane Society remain committed to our animals and to you, our AHS family, and we will continue to do whatever we can to best serve our mission while also keeping safety our top priority.

Please continue to watch our social media channels for the latest information from our team. As always, we appreciate your support.
